Carter’s Polled Herefords began in the fall of 1965 with the purchase of five bred Polled Hereford females by Jimmy Carter. Jimmy’s son Terry joined the operation in 1977 when they began using AI technologies. In 1980, Terry married Mavis and later had two children, Malynda & Troy. Malynda & Troy were each given a heifer when born and that started their own personal herds. Today, there are four herd entities at the Carter Ranch.
Several cows in the Polled Hereford herd go back to the foundation female that was included in the initial purchase, “Baby Lady the Sixth.” In the past, bull sales were done through private treaty sales along with select consignment sales until recently when we moved to a public auction sale in the spring. Select consignments are still made to the North Star Classic and State Sales.
In 1995, a new dimension was added to the ranch, TNT Angus, a registered Black Angus herd that Terry and Troy started. Today the annual production sale is held on the first Friday of April at Lake Region Livestock in Devils Lake, ND. Both the Angus & Hereford bulls are sold in this production sale along with a select group of replacement females.
The coffee is always on and we look forward to visits. If you have any questions on the cattle or would like more information we hope you stop by the ranch or drop us an e-mail. We love to hear from you!
